Rough sleeping in England continues to rise amid the cost of living crisis, yet those sleeping on the streets reveal only part of the wider problem of homelessness. The hidden homelessness that’s associated with sofa surfing and modern slavery means that the true scale of the issue is almost certainly more pronounced. SIFA Fireside is a well established charity that is embedded in Birmingham’s community and generously supported by individual donors and corporate sponsors, including OTD. Yet while ongoing financial support remains vital for keeping the charity running, its operations also rely on having volunteers on the ground to staff its adult support hub, tenancy support services and drop-in centre.

Helping people to rebuild their lives with safety and dignity

We continue to support SIFA Fireside through regular visits, where we helped to prepare food for breakfast and lunch, and deliver table service to local people.

The experience of partnering with a charity in this way is not only hugely rewarding for our team members but allows us to get a better understanding of the incredible stress faced by SIFA’s own people on a daily basis.

We were also proud to:

  • Deliver a bespoke allyship session for frontline staff
  • Share tools and techniques to support teams
  • Offer Carpe Diem coaching support individuals facing particular challenges

During the year we were also able to make donations of essential foods and clothing in support of homeless people, offer support for its comedy fundraiser and purchase a new commercial washing machine.

Melissa Roche, Head of Fundraising Volunteering and Communications, SIFA Fireside said:

“OTD has always been hands-on and proactive in their partnering. As well as being regulars to our volunteering programme, the offer of support has been extended to the purchase of a much-needed washing machine, food and clothing donations, unconscious bias training and more recently coaching for SLT staff.

“The variety of offerings are invaluable to the charity and the development of the staff team. We’re so very grateful for all you do for SIFA Fireside and hope the partnership will long continue.”
