We have all our own definition of progress, but it can be challenging to know where to start.
Whether you’re working towards career progression, a new role or continued success in your current position, goal setting is the best first step.
Goal setting helps you map out your progress and provide a sense of direction in your work.
The truth is that approximately only 20% of people set goals for themselves – and of the 20% that do, just 30% achieve them.
But why is this case?
Let’s explore how to reach your goals and identify some of the key ways in which goal setting helps you succeed.
Six key benefits of goal setting
1. It gives you something to work towards
We’ve all felt we lacked direction at certain points in our lives and careers. Having set goals written down, either on paper or a computer, gives you something tangible to aim towards.
It sounds simple but, when you’ve completed each task, ticking it off or highlighting it green provides that sense of achievement that you have finally done what you set out to do.
2. It helps you to prioritise your tasks
If you struggle to prioritise tasks, goal setting can help you get some clarity. For example, completing more pressing tasks could take the form of daily goals, whereas larger, ongoing tasks could be a goal you aim to complete by the end of the month.
3. It helps alleviate stress
It's easy to feel snowed under when you’re in a demanding role.
Looking at a huge list of tasks can be scary and leave you scratching your head as to where to begin.
However, if you set clear goals and take time into account, you will be able to break down these goals more easily and realise what is and what might not be achievable.
4. It improves your performance
Goal setting helps you keep on track with your work, encourages you to challenge yourself and gives you something tangible to work towards.
5. It increases your personal and job satisfaction
The sense of accomplishment that comes with achieving your goals improves your self-esteem, your mental health and your job satisfaction.
“You are the one that possesses the keys to your being. You carry the passport to your own happiness.”
Diane von Fürstenberg, fashion designer
A renewed passion in your work will shine through in your attitude, your work and your results.
6. It helps you sustain motivation
When you have no end goal in place, it can be difficult to motivate yourself.
Put it this way: you’re more likely to drive your car if you have decided on a final destination than if you’ve just got in, fastened your seatbelt and set off with no real intention.
“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”
Zig Ziglar, author and motivational speaker
It’s clear that goal setting presents plenty of benefits, so long as it is approached in a valuable and realistic way.
